As the sun sets, a brilliant new world illuminates the city…Join NYCxDESIGN, LightFair and IALD for a Manhattan lighting tour. This walking tour will take attendees through distinctly historic areas of New York City. Over the years, these areas have been reinvigorated by contemporary lighting in surprisingly innovative ways. Their stories will each be told through the unique perspectives of designers, historians and neighborhood guides. Amidst the hustle and bustle, discover new details and untold anecdotes of contemporary lighting enhancing architecture and space in these Manhattan neighborhoods that truly never sleep. Even lifelong New Yorkers will uncover surprising insights within the world of urban lighting. We invite you to join this enlightening journey.

About NYCxDESIGN
A nonprofit organization kick-started by the City of New York, NYCxDESIGN’s mission is to celebrate New York City’s role as one of the world’s most innovative and diverse design capitals, while ensuring that the design landscape of the city is increasingly dynamic and inclusive into the future.
NYCxDESIGN’s marquee event is an annual, weeklong Festival celebrating the vanguard of design in New York City. The 11th edition of the NYCxDESIGN Festival returns Thursday, May 18 - Thursday, May 25, 2023. Including major exhibitions, public installations, trade fairs, and dynamic programming and events, the Festival bridges into the broader world of design innovation in the city, shining a light on key talent and groundbreaking projects across the many spheres of the design world from product design to graphics to interiors to architecture and beyond.
The cost per person, per tour is $25. NYCxDESIGN Manhattan Lighting Tours are only open to LightFair attendees. Spots may be limited. Sign up soon for one or both of the tours described below.
The Reinvigoration Tour (Monday, May 22) - High Line + Moynihan
The Reinvigoration Tour will take attendees through the High Line, an obsolete elevated rail line turned into an iconic public park, and Moynihan Train Hall, a historic USPS facility transformed into a state of the art train station.
The New Classics Tour (Tuesday, May 23) - One Vanderbilt, 3 Times Square, One Bryant Park
The New Classics Tour invites attendees to learn more about three buildings that have become contemporary architectural landmarks and the lighting that have come to define their emblematic facades.
On-floor sessions and panel discussions are open to all LightFair attendees. Seating may be limited.

Select lighting designers from NYC will be chosen to be in conversation with one another and discuss the unique aspects of lighting design in NYC. Topic for discussion will incorporate references to tours, and may also include conversation around local supply chain and fabrication, to New York City’s trajectory and opportunity, and how the designers have made it in NYC. We will choose designers with a variety of backgrounds who utilize a variety of techniques, with the goal of each providing a unique perspective.
